WHAT WE BELIEVE

New Beginnings belongs to a movement called The Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) which is a global movement of people seeking to fulfill God’s mission in the world. We’re committed to studying the Word of God and faithfully living it out. We’re committed to the mission that Jesus Christ gave every believer: to make disciples of all nations (Matt 28:18–20).

You will find a great diversity of convictions and practices within the Church of God. Though we have differences, we share a common story of faith, growing together into the fullness of Christ We celebrate our life in Christ and accept our call to be the body of Christ in our world—all to the glory of God.

Here are few statements of what New Beginnings Church of God believes:

  • We believe in one God in three persons— Thought difficult for the human mind to fully comprehend, our one God expresses Himself in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each person of the Trinity serves a unique role to bring God glory and accomplish His purposes in the world. God created all things visible and invisible, and out of chaos created order.

  • Jesus is Lord. The divinity of the one Lord Jesus is central to who we are. There are many descriptions in the Bible of who Jesus is. He is the Bread of Life. The Water of Life. The Lamb of God. The Way, the Truth, and the Life. The one Mediator between God and humankind. The Lord of lords, the King of kings. The Son of Man. The Son of God. The Word become Flesh. The Name at which every knee shall bow.

  • Holiness. The Person, the work, and the power of the Holy Spirit is fundamental to who we are as a people. We firmly believe the truth that the Spirit can transform us, possess us, equip us, and empower us. It is the work of the Holy Spirit that makes us holy, sets us apart for sacred service, and seals us for eternity’s sake. It is the Spirit that convicts us of sin and enables us to overcome sin. It is the Holy Spirit that can breathe supernatural gifts into us, for Jesus’ sake. He is the Comforter promised by Jesus and the witness of our redemption.

  • Salvation is through Jesus Christ. We acknowledge that all have sinned and doing so broke our relationships with God, self, others, and the whole created order. However, we believe that, through his exemplary life, sacrificial death, and bodily resurrection, Jesus Christ is the only sufficient atonement for our sins. God’s work of salvation is all by grace, not by our merits. We receive this great salvation when, by the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, we repent of our sin and believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. We can have assurance of God’s faithfulness in our salvation as we remain faithful to Him. We are grateful that the same power that raised Christ from the dead raises us from spiritual death, saving us from sin to follow Christ in this life and to live with Him eternally.

  • Unity. We are a people uniquely called by God to be a catalyst for Christian unity. It is part of the history and story behind the Church of God movement. We are convinced that the splintering of the body is not the Lord’s work, but the enemy’s; we believe that hell trembles at the prospect of a people united, redeemed by the blood, and possessed by the Spirit.

  • We follow the Great Commandments. Love God with your whole self. And, love your neighbors as yourself. The Scripture tells us this is the sum of the Law and the Prophets. These simple statements demonstrate how we are to interact not only with God but also with each other. They are more than a simple saying but for a people in the pursuit of holiness, the Great Commandments must clothe us.

  • The Supremacy of Scripture. We are a people of the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments, supernaturally inspired, preserved across time, cultures, and continents, delivered to us, useful for teaching us what is true and correcting us when we are wrong. It is our backstop, the measure of conduct, faith, and practice. Whatever the question, whatever the test, whatever comes before us, in the end, it is the Scripture, above all other disciplines, that informs and defines us.

  • Great Commission. To go and make disciples is the divine privilege and responsibility given to each of us. We champion the work of evangelism and discipleship in our own neighborhood, as well as the sending out teams and partnering with missionaries in foreign countries to share the good news of Jesus with all people.

  • Kingdom of God. The rule and reign of God is a present reality to be embraced and experienced today. With gratitude we believe that we experience the Reign of God as the presence, love, and power of God in our lives, in the church, in history, and in the whole created order, now and in the future. This means we as children of God, under the Reign of God, are tasked to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God. All the while remembering that His kingdom is not of this world, and will therefore never be about earthly politics.

  • Ordinances. In obedience to our Lord, we baptize believers by immersion as a sign of death to sin, resurrection to new life in Christ, and incorporation into the mission of the people of God. While we don’t practice infant baptism, we do encourage and celebrate with Parents through a dedication service. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper as participation in and proclamation of the death and resurrection of our Lord until He comes. We wash each other’s feet, following Jesus who assumed the role of servant by washing the feet of His disciples. We anoint with oil in the name of the Lord and pray that people may be healed.

  • Spiritual Gifts. Gifts are given to every person who believes in Christ so that the work of God can be accomplished in the church and the world. The distributions of gifts by the Holy Spirit for the edification of the body of Christ is not determined by gender. God has poured out His Spirit on all people and we read in the Bible that both sons and daughters will prophesy. We understand that it is the church’s responsibility, in response to God’s call, to appoint and equip gifted women and men to a variety of leadership responsibilities for building up the body of Christ.
